The effect of motivation on employees morale in an organization

THE EFFECT OF MOTIVATION  ON EMPLOYEES MORALE IN AN ORGANIZATION

Motivation
Weihrich, H and Kointz, H.  (2005) defined motivation as a general term applying to the entire class of drive, desires, needs, wishes and similar forces. They are of the view that, says that manager motivate their subordinate do to say that they do things which they hope will satisfy these drives and induce the subordinate to act in a  desired  manner. Cole, R. E (1995) also defined motivation as the term used to describe those processes, both instinctive and rational, by which people seek to satisfy the basic drives, perceived needs and personal goals, which trigger human behaviour. Nwachukwu C. C. (2006) defined motivation as that energizing force that induces, compels, and maintain behaviour. As mentioned ,  motivation can be considered as a complex force, drives, tension, state or other mechanism that initiates and maintains voluntary activities, directed towards the achievement of goals.
Morale
Morale is an elusive quality which involves feelings, emotions, attitude and perception towards the organization and its members. Positive morale is usually characterized by discipline, confidence and willingness to perform. Low morale can be attributed to many factors such as job insecurity, lack of fair compensation policy, uncertain business conditions, and excessive outsourcing practices. Low morale affects company income, productivity, financial competitiveness and organizational objectives (Sauermann & Cohen, 2008). Low morale is an outcome of managerial behavior where managers address their employees from a top-down commanded refuse to communicate directly on workplace issues (Sauermann & Cohen, 2008). This kind of communication results in a gap between employees and managers, which in turn leads to
employee distrust, disrespect, and reduction of morale and workforce motivation (Chungsup & et al., 2012). Low morale also causes employees to lose interest, especially when managers don’t appreciate their efforts and the tasks performed (Zeynep & Huckman, 2008). (Ngambi, 2011).

In General, high motivation and high morale lead to high productivity .Managers have to work for improving the morale of their employees, as high morale makes the work a better working environment, and it helps the organization to attain its goals easily(Likert, 1932)

How To Boost Employee Morale And Motivation

Everyone wants to be happy at work, and increasingly, employees are valuing a positive work environment..Happier employees are more motivated, and will also feel more loyal to the company. Below are the ways to build up high morale through motivation:

  • Give Them Something to Believe In
  • Support Them As People, Not Just Employees
  • Recognize Their Efforts
  • Think positive, act positive.
  • Acknowledge that uncertainty exists.
  • Be visible throughout the organization.
  • Celebrate small achievements.
  • Stay in touch with all of your constituents.
  • Be honest.
  • Be generous with praise.
  • Make your ideas theirs.
  • Never criticize or correct.
  • Make everyone a leader.
  • Give recognition and small rewards as certificates ,   plaques ,trophies or ribbons ,cash bonuses, tickets to sporting or cultural events and vacation trips
  • Building Employees' Involvement
This can  be done by  Identifying any problems that might stand , by Sharing the      vision and the mission of the business, by Giving some power to employees and by encouraging risk-taking.
  • Plan social and athletic activities.
These types of activities allow people to interact with each other on a level that  can build stronger professional bonds.

Conclusion
Low employee morale can adversely affect the ability to attract and retain the best employees and have a detrimental effect on productivity. Employees with high morale are motivated, and their morale also manifests in intangible outcomes such as energy and enthusiasm, which reflect well on the company and create a work environment in which new ideas are encouraged. Employees who are motivated do what they need to do, when they need to do it. They may even go above and beyond the specific instructions provided, through problem solving and working extra hours if necessary. However, an employee motivated by high morale will keep his motivation as long as his morale is high.A manager should have the capacity to build morale by creating a positive work environment. Make employees feel valued by praising their accomplishments and encouraging them to learn rather than criticizing their mistakes. Give them enough autonomy for them to make real contributions and feel pride in company successes. So it’s crucially important that ,business leaders should be aware of how to lessen the impact of uncertainty and keep employee morale and productivity as high as possible.

  2. Informative article Shantha Using rewards as motivators divides employee motivation into two categories: intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic rewards are internal, psychological rewards such as a sense of accomplishment or doing something because it makes one feel good. Extrinsic rewards are rewards that other people give to you such as a money, compliments, bonuses, or trophies.
